Alchemy Learning is partnering with The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland, one of Maryland’s oldest K-12 independent schools, in an initiative to utilize Alchemy’s cloud-based curriculum management software to design and implement a robust character education curriculum. Brandon Mollett, Boys’ Latin’s Middle School principal and leader of the initiative, describes the software-facilitated project as an opportunity “to be more intentional with our character instruction by articulating our core values of courage, integrity, and compassion, and by giving students an opportunity to understand what those core values mean by putting them in positions to live those values.”
Boys’ Latin will utilize Alchemy’s SmartBinder Pro software (presently in private-beta) as the mechanism via which the new character education curriculum is collaboratively developed by administrators and faculty members, stored and structured in an easily accessible format, and delivered to students via the school’s advisory program. “As the school’s mission is to teach character, it becomes important for us to have a vehicle that can carry our curriculum and consistently facilitate delivery to and by each of our faculty members who work with our students,” Mollett said. “In addition to allowing for teachers to share resources, student work, and ideas, Alchemy allows for teachers to take curriculum and use it in a way that fits their personality, teaching styles, and the individual students with whom they work.” The partnership will also utilize Alchemy’s Standards Mine to tag character education lessons and materials to customized academic standards to aid in indexing and sourcing of curricular items.
Boys’ Latin is the oldest independent, nonsectarian college preparatory school for boys in Maryland. The school offers a rigorous academic program that prepares young men for the challenges of the 21st century. The school’s motto Esse Quam Videri—“To Be Rather Than To Seem”—emphasizes the development of one’s integrity, courage, and compassion for others and has been the core value of a Boys’ Latin education since 1844. www.boyslatinmd.com
